Upper West Side

Upper West Side

The upper west side is a vibrant residential neighborhood. You will not find large corporate offices here. If you live here you may have to commute to work. There are many restaurants, small businesses, some large ones too (Starbucks and The Gap will not stay away), bars and lounges and live music. Kids have the Children's Museum during the day and big kids have the American Museum of Natural History.

We have big cooperatives like Mayfair Towers and One Sherman Square and big condominiums such as The Laureate and Ariel East and West.  One thing I find so charming about the upper west side are all the brownstones.  If you don't mind a walk up (some townhouses have elevators) you can live in a pre-war charmer with outdoor space and a woodburning fireplace. It may need some updating but might be worth the cozy. And brownstones come in rentals, coops, and even a few condos, or single family homes so it is possible to find the right fit for you.

One of my favorite features of the upper west side is that it is only about five blocks wide tucked between Riverside Park and Central Park. No matter where you live on the upper west side you will be close to one or both of the parks.  All the everyday conveniences you can need (great transportation, groceries, drycleaning, doggy daycare, etc) plus nightlife and culture.  There is something for everyone here whether married, single, young or seasoned.

My Upper West Side picks of the week:

Dive 75 on West 75th Street between Amsterdam and Columbus.  Dive 75 is a dive bar with inexpensive drinks. Go with beer, mixed drinks, juice or soda; I'm not so hot on their wine. And play board games like Candyland and Monopoly all night next to a giant fish tank until you are giddy with nostalgia.

Machiavelli on Columbus Avenue at the corner of 85th Street.  Machiavelli opens everyday at 8:00am for breakfast and in the evening you can have handmade pasta while the pianist (local musicians or Juilliard students) plays on the piano. Lovely and lively ambience and atmosphere and comfortable furniture. A wonderful relaxing and delicious night out with family, friends, and romantic enough for a date.
